Pain Reprocessing Therapy

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help people reduce or eliminate chronic pain by addressing the way the brain processes pain signals.

For many individuals living with chronic pain, the nervous system can become overprotective and continue sending pain signals even after the original injury has healed or when no ongoing tissue damage is present. PRT helps retrain the brain and nervous system to interpret these signals more accurately and safely.

Rather than dismissing pain as “all in your head,” PRT recognizes that pain is very real while also understanding that the brain plays a powerful role in how pain is experienced.

At Timshel, we use a compassionate, neuroscience-informed approach to help clients better understand their pain, reduce fear around symptoms, and build new patterns of safety within the mind and body.

Our approach

How PRT works

Pain Reprocessing Therapy focuses on reducing the fear and danger signals associated with chronic pain. When the brain perceives pain as threatening, the nervous system often stays stuck in a cycle of hyper vigilance, tension, stress, and symptom amplification.

PRT helps interrupt this cycle through:

  • Education about how chronic pain develops in the brain and nervous system

  • Learning to reinterpret pain sensations with less fear and alarm

  • Nervous system regulation and emotional awareness

  • Mindfulness and somatic techniques

  • Reducing pain-related anxiety and avoidance behaviors

  • Building a greater sense of safety, confidence, and resilience

Over time, many clients experience reduced pain intensity, increased functioning, and greater emotional freedom.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy sessions may incorporate:

  • Psychoeducation about pain science

  • Somatic awareness practices

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

  • Emotional processing

  • Nervous system regulation techniques

  • Cognitive and behavioral approaches

  • Gentle exposure to feared sensations or activities

  • Self-compassion and resilience-building work

Our goal is not simply symptom management — it is helping clients create lasting change in the way their brain and body respond to pain.
