"When you connect to the heart of a child anything is possible"

- Dr. Karen Purvis

A Bit About Me

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming — whether you’re looking for support for your child, your family, or yourself. My goal is to create a space where you feel welcomed, understood, and never judged.

I specialize in working with young children (ages 0–5), children, teens, adults, and families who have experienced trauma, adoption or foster care, abuse, neglect, divorce, high-conflict family situations, or other life experiences that have left them feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. I also work with adults who are carrying the weight of childhood trauma and are ready to better understand themselves and move toward healing.

One of my greatest passions is helping parents better understand their children. Often, the behaviors that feel confusing or frustrating are actually a child’s way of communicating an unmet need. Together, we slow down, get curious, and begin to understand the message beneath the behavior. I believe that when children feel truly seen, heard, and safe, healing becomes possible — and when parents feel supported rather than blamed, families can create meaningful and lasting change.

My work is grounded in play therapy, Somatic Experiencing®, and attachment-focused, trauma-informed care. As a Somatic Experiencing practitioner, I help children and adults understand how trauma lives in the nervous system and gently support their capacity to find safety, resilience, and regulation. With children, healing often happens through play — the language they know best. With adults, we explore patterns that may have begun long ago, reconnecting with inner strengths and moving beyond survival.

I also work closely with my colleague, Whitney Berg, to support families in a collaborative way. Together, we focus on whole-family healing — creating space for every member of the family system to feel seen, heard, and supported in their unique journey.

As someone who was in foster care and later adopted, I bring both professional training and lived experience to my work with adoptive, foster, and kinship families. While every story is unique, I understand many of the complexities these families face and feel honored to walk alongside them with compassion and hope.

Above all, I believe in connection before correction. Therapy isn’t about fixing you or your child — it’s about building trust, strengthening relationships, and creating the safety needed for growth and healing. My hope is that every person who walks through my door leaves feeling more connected to themselves, more confident in their strengths, and reminded that they don’t have to navigate life’s hardest moments alone.

"I believe every behavior has a story, and every child deserves someone who is willing to understand it."

Bre loves connecting with others through honest conversation and shared experience. As someone who was adopted and has walked through her own journey of trauma and healing, she brings both heart and insight to her work. Bre uses her story, along with her education, to help foster parents better understand the effects of trauma and how to support children with compassion. She works with Foster Adopt MN and also offers trainings and talks on her own. Bre and Whitney enjoy teaming up to present together and bring real-life perspective to their sessions. Education

2019-2021

Masters of Social Work

Simmons School of Social Work

Completed my Master’s at Simmons School of Social Work with a focus on attachment and trauma strengthened my understanding of how early experiences shape relationships and overall well-being. I gained practical, research-based tools to help individuals and families heal from trauma, guided by professors who are deeply invested in students’ growth. This training prepared me to provide compassionate, informed support to those navigating life’s most challenging experiences.

2009-2013

Liberal Arts for the Human Services
University of Minnesota Morris

At the University of Minnesota Morris, studying Human Services through a liberal arts lens taught me how to support people and communities with empathy and understanding. I learned how relationships, social systems, and personal stories shape lives — and how thoughtful care can make a real difference. Like Timshel — “thou mayest” — this program reminds us that we have the power to choose compassion, listen deeply, and use our skills to serve others in meaningful ways.
